Payne died on Wednesday after falling from the third floor of his hotel room in Argentina. He was 31 years old.

His cause of death was determined to be multiple traumas that led to internal and external bleeding, according to the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office’s preliminary autopsy report.

Per an emergency medical doctor, who was on the scene at the time of the accident, Payne had a “cranial fracture” and other “extremely serious injuries” that led to his death.

“Our role was to head there quickly, give medical attention and try to resuscitate him, but his injuries were incompatible with life,” Alberto Crescenti told the US Sun.

Payne had traveled to Argentina two weeks before his death where he hoped to reconcile with Horan, the singer shared on his social media. The “Strip that Down” singer attended Horan’s Oct. 2 concert to “talk” to his former friend after “a while” apart.

“I think we might just go and say hello,” the late 31-year-old said in a video on Snapchat that was reposted on X.

“It’s been a while since me and Niall have spoken. We’ve got a lot to talk about. And I would like to square up a couple things with the boy.”

Though, he assured his followers there were “no bad vibes or anything like that.”

Shortly after Payne’s sudden death, a music industry insider revealed to us that Payne had long struggled with his level of fame after achieving success with his ex-bandmates in One Direction.

“Liam struggled with finding his path as a solo artist,” the source said. “As overwhelming as One Direction’s fame could be at times, he hoped to replicate aspects of it on his own, which was unattainable, frankly.”

The insider continued, adding that Payne was “envious” of his friends’ solo success after the group split up in 2016.

“Liam was really proud of the boys and all their accomplishments after the split,” our source says, “but he was definitely envious, too. It was hard not to compare himself to them.”
